The ****All-New**** Eggheads and Are You An Egghead? thread

I felt it was time, we had one thread for the two shows.

We know have an 1 hr 15 mins of all new Eggheads stuff on BBC 2 each day.

4.30 - 5.15pm Are you an Egghead? with Dermot Murnaghan weekdays. Looking for a sixth Egghead who rotate with the others.
First episode here (Available for just under a week, from this post)

6pm Eggheads the new series continues with Jeremy Vine

God this is a dire programme! Any of them could be Eggheads, they're all so damn full of themselves

They certainly love themselves.

You need widescreen to accommodate their heads, egos, and the gut of that ubiquitous overgrown wally.

One doesn't need to know them all! They just give off such an air of superiority.

Well, the 2 that were on yesterday were Stephanie Bruce and Dave Rainford.

Stephanie is almost TOO modest - she has fantastic knowledge but never blows her own trumpet. Even when winning the People's Quiz last year, beating thousands of people in the process, she remained quiet and gracious in victory.

Dave is just the sweetest guy you could ever hope to meet -also very modest and a seriously under- rated quizzer.

It might be the format that is making you feel they are big-headed. Unfortunately the programme makers in ther wisdom ask contestants to waffle round their answers instead of just saying the correct answer straight out. This could give the impression that they like the sounds of their own voices, but in fact is not a natural thing for a quizzer to do.

Please don't tar all the contestants with the same brush - I can assure you that most quizzers are genuinely nice people - of course there are one or two exceptions but that's true in all walks of life.

Who is tarring them all with the same brush ?

The comment was made about this afternoon's show, to which I added my comment. You have jumped, wrongly, to your own conclusion.
I have no idea who 'all' of them are, nor will I be watching such a dire format again.

I was unfortunate to see the final ten minutes of an excruciating show with two haughty, supercilious contestants, with the most unendearing personalities imaginable.

If you consider yourself responsible for their PR have a word with them about self-awareness.

They all seem to know each other from the quizzing circuit, does anyone know are the eggheads pro quizzers or do they have other jobs?

Sorry, able1 I thought the implication was that all the contestants were big-headed (there was a comment on another thread the other day that the Egghead were all big-headed and there is no more modest person on earth than Kevin!)

Both Jenny and Mark who were on today are also nice people honestly! I do think the format doesn't help.

Loop147, the 5 current Eggheads are all now 'professional' quizzers, all of the contestants have day jobs as far as I know.

Well Jenny is my niece and trust me she is a very nice person ... she also has a very nice personality. At the end of the day you are making a judegment based on a few minutes of a TV show - She has a sucessful job in the media, plenty of friends, and a very nice life. luckily she has better things to do with her time than post bitter messages on a forum...I will pass on your comments though, I'm sure she will find them very helpful. Strangly enough I find people who make judements on individuals based on ten minutes of a TV show unendering - strange isn't it :-)

I hear the same thing time and time again about the Eggheads and now it's been poured on like liquid manure on the Are you an Egghead contestants, mere days after it's started. It frankly disgusts me.

In real life you will find that Steph, Dave, Jen and Mark are pleasant, modest and impressively intelligent people. (Ok, maybe not Mark, his ego takes up much of south Wales, but I bet he has a ton more self-awareness than you and the fat digs do you know favours)

But you don't do you? Instead, you make assumptions about them based mainly on their appearing on a show in which they have plainly expressed their intention to become an Egghead (how sad! how embarrassing that they wouldn't mind a well-paid job on the television with very undemanding hours!) and because they have been instructed to talk out their answer.

Do you honestly think they, or any of the people on Eggheads - Eggies, normal teams, AYAE contestants - actually wants to give a full, lecture-like explanation that comes off so smug and ostentatiously? Do you think they do it for fun?

Or do you just buy into everything TV shows you and marry it to your existing prejudices (yeah, take those clever bastards down a peg or three) so you get a few jollies? Ever thought of the selective editing and cutting that may shape your views or the television production edicts or are you too stupid to realise that, like some empty-headed sheep?

WELL DUH. Didn't you listen to the premise of the show? The programme's avowed intent is to find "the greatest quiz brain in Britain" ... to join arguably the greatest quiz team in yadda yadda. They're meant to be superior to everyone. Not that they actually are, in the sense of hoity toity, oh look at me with my superior knowledge out- superioring you thickos at home, who are obviously inferior to us because we know a few quiz facts.

Having said that it is TV. And if TV is good for anything it's for forming irrational prejudices about people you never meet. Like toffs with food shows, that Ten Years Younger woman, Andi Peters, anyone actors with ITV golden handcuffs agreements, people on Shipwrecked, the list goes on.

So I do understand why you're completely bloody wrong.

Hmmmmm. Firstly, we seem to have hit a raw nerve here. Which one of the contestants are you then?

Secondly, I pay my Licence fee and I don't have to like every programme that is shown.

And thirdly, this is a discussion forum for members of the public to discuss our views on many things, including in this part of the forum, TV programmes! There's no need to be rude to me or anyone else. My opinion, to which I am entitled, is that I find the contestants too full of themselves.

And I'm not your "thicko at home" either, but I have no wish to go on a TV show to prove it!

So saying that they were all "full of themselves" wasn't rude? says it all really

Oh I get it now.

You and your friends are happy to enter quizzes, and behave, according to you, like marionettes at the behest of the production staff.

However when valid comments are made on a forum as to how preposterous you were made to look - well that's just not fair is it ?

Forums don't work like that, thankfully.
I'm sorry it so disgusts you and your cohorts.

On what basis have you decided Mark has a 'ton more self-awareness' than myself ?
What are 'do you know favours' ?

Incidentally, I am not an empty-headed sheep.

Maybe to the unbiased viewer though, that is the way they come across!

I know you have a relative who has been a contestant, and I'm sure she's a very nice person, but the way the contestants come across in my opinion is as overly superior and smug. I shall not be watching the programme again.

and that is completly fair comment, it's a TV programme and wrong that people would make terrible judegments about someones personality based on a watching part of TV programme. I'm not a fan of the Egg-Heads programme myself, so I don't watch it. It's important to recognise the difference between the individual, and the objectives of the TV show. I am sure if you had seen her on University Challenge, 15-1, Weakest Link, Mastermind etc you would have a different opinion.

Well seeing as I watch/have watched all of those, I probably have seen her before!

I usually enjoy the entertainment of the normal Eggheads show; we all know what to expect with CJ's faces and expressions, and his apparent air of superiority until he gets something wrong!

I hope they give the new Egghead chance to be themselves, and not foist a "TV persona" upon them, otherwise it'll be another show I won't be watching.

Nobody said the contestants had to behave 'like marionettes', just that they were asked to behave in a particular way by the producers to achieve the end result they wanted.

The 'valid comments about being made to look preposterous' were no such thing, they were personal comments about people's characters and appearance. It's pretty rude to make a value judgement about someone's character based on 10 minutes' screen time IMO, and I find personal remarks about people's appearance petty (and predictable!)

I'll apologise in advance for being 'full of myself' and fat. I often ask myself why I put myself through the ordeal of appearing on quiz shows, given that I nearly throw up with nerves before each one! I think after this I might not bother again, so that'll be one 'smug' person less on your TV.

If the guy who won today's match ever became an Egghead it would be an absolute joke - his total lack of Film & TV or Music knowledge would make him an easy target.

I really hope the final tests the finallists on every single category and doesn't rest solely on the random general knowledge round

My word you are sensitive souls behind all the bluster.

I have no idea who you are: whether you are are male or female, but will just clarify a few points;

My last post was an interpretation of Olav's comments on how the producers required the contestants to behave.

I stand by my original comments - this is a forum and people post their own opinions.
I have no idea how much is a true or false persona - and neither does any other viewer.
