Collate the New HD channel rumours here!

All this banter about great upscaling SD....... not good enough!

Not one of us, even the absolute Virgin FanBoys, isn't busting to get confirmation of the rumoured HD channel allocation after the recent EPG changes and off-the-cuff comments from maverick Virgin customer care advisors.

I'm starting a new thread just for people to say what they've heard and link to where they've heard it. This is one I've seen.....

I think that the discussion of the paucity of HD content is perfectly valid and how, if ever, Virgin should implement it.

I just think that the rumours are just unhelpful, no one knew that the Sky Channels were coming back until Sky Media started pitching it to advertisers and once it was confirmed there was a big marketing campaign to go with. Even media boy had stopped guessing in his 'coming soon' thread.

I see no reason why HD wouldn't be the same, until there is an announcement I would recommend to anyone interested in linear HD to go to Sky.

That said I hope VM get round to adding HD, competition in any market place is good news for the consumer.

It's true. I feel tied in to VM because of good broadband but realise Sky is THE HD provider in the UK.

Are we being made mugs for our loyalty? Or getting what we pay for? (£60 a month for XL everything, free HD?)

Tend to agree, but with the EPG shuffle there is obviously something in the pipe line but what.

Surely there is not enough time to aunch HD before xmas

Anyway my contracts up in January, Ill bide my time until then

As far as I can tell there are three rumours:

1) "15 Sky HD channels by the end of the year"
This has been fuelled by Neil Berkett's comments in his presentation to investors, but he's referring to what he hopes is a favourable (to Virgin) outcome from the OFCOM investigation into Pay TV in the UK and by the thawing of the VM/Sky relationship.
I'll be stunned if this comes about - why would Sky do it?
2) "C4 HD, ITV HD, Sky1 HD and FX HD early in the New Year"
Not sure where this originates from but it seems more likely than the one above. Virgin issued a press release a year ago saying they had the rights to C4 HD as a linear channel already, so that may well be on its way - not so sure about the others.
3) "Ten HD channels in the new year"
This and similar statements from Virgin have often been reported on the forums and blogs over the last few months, often as a response from Virgin to demands for more HD. The lack of any details and no official announcement from Virgin indicates that there's little to support this.

Do you feel as if you are getting what you pay for?

At the moment XL everything is £56,according to the website,so i guess you could be asking will hd be available for £4 extra as you quote XL everything and free hd for £60.

Ths sky basics issue was not known about generally until just before it happened, although old boy,a poster on here was long predicting its return! The same will be true i guess of any hd additions.

I believe more hd will come, its interesting to note though and this is just a general point,in the satellite forums sky customers are not asking, when are we going to get free setanta with our full package tv subs like vm do!.

Virgin media customers do seem harder to satisfy, although probably that is not a bad thing.

No, the £4 extra wasn't relevant. Just off-the-cuff. My bill is 61 with an extra STB

A lot of VM staff got told a month or two ago that CH4 HD would be first to arrive, followed swiftly after by ITV HD and then around a half dozen or so other channels soon after that. All of which will commence in early 2009.

But as I dont work for VM and wasnt there when Neil Burkett told most of the staff this I cant tell you exactly what was said but I am sure a lot of others on here that do work there will fill in the true story.

Anyone got any idea how long testing goes on before public implementation?

Also, is this link wrong (it doesn't work) or should we question the info altogether?

I'm quite stoked about the possibility of Pobol y Cwm in HD.

so basically four hd channels (not counting s4c as i can't speak welsh!!) ?

if it turns out to be true then it still wouldn't be enough to stop me going back to sky.

*edit

although actually reading the thread tells me it's a little more than 4

if it's true that we'll get setanta sports HD for free then that would be great.

But if it is true its a step in the right direction, you didn't really think that Sky would just roll over and give Virgin there premium HD channels

Where is the info from? Can you check on Wiki?

There is no reference marker for the table of test info. If it was an insider, would they have released it to Wiki rather than one of these Tech web sites?

There have been rumours of new HD channels for so long, its the televisual equivalent of the boy who cries wolf. Nobody believes it anymore.

this is why i'm very sceptical really - i've got time to see what happens as my virgin deal doesn't expire until late april, but to be honest i wouldn't be greatly surprised if that time comes and the HD channels are nowhere to be seen.

well virgin themselves have now announced it

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/digitalt...-channels.html

however ..

Quote:
Berkett said that a "plan to add linear high definition channels" had been developed but did not elaborate on timescales or precise channels.
this made me laugh though ..

Quote:
Virgin does, however, offer a variety of high definition content on demand
Indeed it does, when it can be bothered to ADD SOMETHING NEW!

Speak for yourself lol i couldn't really give a tosh about HD channels as they are not as good as everyone makes out. Yes the picture is slightly better but it's not like it's a massive leap forward ie from black and white to colour!

You can't actually tell people that upscaled SD isn't good enough for them. The fact is even Sky have less than 10% of their user base on the HD product - meaning 90% of their base are satisfied with hardware that doesn't even upscale SD or offer an HDMI interface!
