The Sunshine Brand

The Sunshine Brand is fantastic with plenty of great tunes always being played. Sunshine Gold 1530am is fantastic for the older audience or if you're like me and you like the older music! The FM station is great too. Generally a brilliant brand of stations in my opinion.

Any thoughts?

Yes - still off-air at 13:25 on Sunday 21st. 1530 on-air though.

Don't forget the mighty Sunshine 855!

Agreed, a great group of stations. Better than the offerings here on the south coast.

Sounded really good earlier when I tuned in, good to have it back on track.

For me, the one let down on Sunshine 855 at the moment is Roy Stevens - on Sundays and Swing. Is it just me that finds him unlistenable?

"Sunshine 855, your Amazing AM." Popmungous.

I feel that it is rather un necessary that you feel the need to slate Roy Stevens in such a way. We all had to start somewhere and I am sure you were in his position once upon a time.

Is it rather a poor management issue that we have here.

A – I hope that whoever employed Roy thought that he had some potential talent and provided him with house style points before allowing him anywhere near the microphone.

B – If the previous point is the case, then why does he appear not to be getting any one to one coaching in an attempt to improve his on air performance.

C – I hope that it’s not the case that Roy is being exploited and working as a “ work for free to gain experience presenter “. If this is the case, credit to Roy for wanting the experience, but ultimately it will damage the brand as F – O - C jocks never have the same passion or professionalism that a paid as a job presenter will have. You only have to look at Community Radio Station sound output to clarify this.

There are several other reasons why I think there would appear to be lack of management and staff experience issues at Sunshine 855 at the moment, including on Xmas Day that the Breakfast Jock felt it was required to call the local BBC station, in the same TSA live on air. Not only is this dangerous in the current “ crank call culture “ , but also potential commercial suicide. You don’t go to the supermarket and see them advertising a rival competitor. Thank God for his sake the BBC did not answer the phone.

Good luck Roy, I hope that the powers that be spend some time in getting you sounding right. Whatever happened to the Sunshine 855 AM, that had had that big FM sound on MW, which was achieved on a shoestring?. Perhaps that’s for another thread.

Happy New Year!

Sunshine 855 - Roy STEVENS on Sunday

Hello all!

I am relatively new to Radio Presentation, my boss Nick Jones is giving me coaching and feedback to me on a regular basis!

At the moment, I still find it nerve-wracking, although that is beginning to fade and I am finding a style of Presentation that is right for me, so who knows, let's see what happens over the next few weeks and months!

My show has been extended from 11-1 originally, now it is 11-3 which I am thrilled to bits about!!!

What I would please welcome is CONSTRUCTIVE feedback, it is a wonderful experience to become a Presenter, and most of all, I am really, really enjoying my time at Sunshine!!!

Happy Listening!!!

With Kind Regards

Roy STEVENS

There is no poor management at the station. The recent past was a differnet matter, of course. The station has turned around now, and is all set for a good future in partnership with it's advertisers and us listeners - a true community-facing station. Even going back a couple of years, the station was OK but was verging on the mechanical as regards presentation i.e. ....well, it's 11:20 and 5 seconds - they will do the community billboard now.... All that's changed. It's a fresh and informal, but business-like presentation, able to be flexible with the programming.

I think that it's a great station, going in the right direction. And a lot of it is thanks to Nick Jones, who does so much behind the scenes.

Roy Stevens is an excellent young presenter, whose style and voice are just right for radio. He has a great future ahead of him. I hope that he stays in the area - as no doubt his greatest fans, his two lovely terriers, do too.

Good luck to all concerned !

Discounting me not enjoying Roys show for a minute. (Nothing to say, I was asleep!)

855 is without Nick or Adie this morning - back to back music, not many adverts, and IRN only.

Hope all is okay.

1530 was ok on the way to the train station this morning, and just now on the way home. Anybody know if 954 is back? It was off all over Christmas/New Year.

I take it that you are being sarcastic, or dont work within the industry and thus don't really understand anything about how a radio station should sound, or the legal issues that mis guided presenter actions may cause. Based on the fact that you take objection to my many very valid points.

I am pleased that Nick is doing so much behind the scenes, after all radio today is all about multi tasking, the days of show and go are long gone. This must be why when I listen recently there are so many rules being broken. Perhaps the staff are so tied up with other duties around the station that they foget the basics so often.

I could have been put in a very embarrassing situation on the school run in the car this morning at aboout 8.15 am, explaining to a young child what a "Knee Trembler in the toilet " was. This all centred around a phone call with a spoof character called " Mr Singh ", following the Prince episode of the weekend, this should have been steered well clear of , not to metion the sexual nature of " Knee Trembler in the toilet " Highly inappropriate for Breakfast Radio and once again demonstrates my points of lack of experience in both presenters and management.

That all said it is also nice to see that some kind of local radio is being rebuilt from the smouldering ashes left behind by Laser Broadcasting, which can't be an easy task in the current economic climate.

855 - off till about 5pm, currently playing a "technical difficulties, back soon," loop.

We missed the 50th anniversary of Motown ! It was on 12 January 1959 that Tamla Records was founded ! Sitting there eating my lasagne tonight, listening to the loop - and there the reminder was, the leader in the Times ! No chance to ask Phil Dent on the day, or even a day late - next time he's back, I'll phone in for some Tamla. Can't let THAT anniversary pass uncelebrated !

UTV Station U105, have had some great shows featuring the
Motown Anniversary, Soulfood on a Thu night at 7pm has a
2 hour special, and if Part 1 last week was anything to go
by, part 2 this Thursday would be well worth a listen,
every track a Motown Classic, singles and albums.

The superb Jerry Lang Show which is on 5 nights a week, last night featured some great
Tamla tunes as well, like Junior Walker's Walk in The Night,
which I hadn't heard for ages, well worth listening to either
of those shows, even if it does mean having to listen on-line.

.

Thanks for that info - I'll make a point of listening to the Thursday night one ! What a brilliant genre of music it has been - some of the best music played on radio over the years. Every song ( and I gather there were over 200 hits ), so well produced - every song telling a story - and everlasting songs too. Some music is so dated - a 1-week wonder - but not Motown.

Motown has outlasted Detroit too. Lots of unemployment, derelict car factories. You even have to pass a security guard to get onto the railway station. And many Detroit people don't even know where it is, so car-centred were they !

Motown and radio - made for each other.

And Sunshine 855 is back too, and celebrating Motown ! What more could we wish for ?

I've just had a spare hour to catch up with your link. A fascinating story, not just the Sunshine in the hotel, but all of the Irish stations of the 1980s. It is a remarkable and valuable historical document.

Most importantly, what a telling remark in the summing-up :

...Stations lost their personality, although in reality, they had woken up to professionalism....

That could be interpreted in a slightly different way, when looking at the problems within current UK radio. If much of it still had any personality, it might be a completely different story. At least we can value the small parts of it that are allowed to have such a personality.

Thank you for the link - a fascinating insight.
