Channel 4 making a huge mistake

They are wanting to air a message from the Iranian President at Christmas 09. Airing a message from scum like that on a day of peace in a country like the UK will cost Channel 4.

Would this be a bad time to point out that they already aired a message from the Iranian leader this Christmas?

They should just save cash and repeat the one they have already done for Christmas 08

Do you not mean 2008, as in a few days ago?

If you don't have the mental capacity to watch his speech then don't do it (even though its a bit late now!).

Yet more repeats! It's always that "DinnerJacket" guy, was he in "Friends"?

Why can't Channel Four make new Christmas messages featuring characters from the Star Wars universe perhaps?

The fact that we allow him to broadcast here is proof of how much better we are than him. Gordon Brown wouldn't be allowed to make a broadcast in Iran during Eid.

I'm completely against the Iranian government's methods (dubious nuclear activity, excuting homosexuals etc.), but I'm also against Daily-Mail-esque hype about a nation about which most people in this country know little. The day we stop allowing broadcasts like this is the day we stop being a democracy.

Furthermore, the President showed respect and maturity in the actual message - if we're to ban unsavoury political broadcasts, let's start with the BNP, who do nothing to hide their evil opinions in party-political messages.

next years christmas message

How about a message from our friends the terrorists who murdered over 3000 people at 9 11. This was gross in the extreme in my view. By the way how much did CH4 get paid for this christmas message from these terrorists??

Last edited by flashgordon1952 : 31-12-2008 at 00:06. Reason: gross instead of groos

There could be a logistical problem with that!

Please explain, how the (democratically elected) president of Iran is a terrorist?

I think that before this thread goes any further, everyone should read what he said:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008...istmas-message

Personally I can see very little sign of anything offensive, the basic message is no different to what the Queen peddles out every year.... except it contains more religion (and more about the Birthday boy!)

That's a bit of a leap isn't it?

I am in complete agreement with you on this.

I think the majority of people who complained about this in all forms of media did so on the fact he was doing the speech, not on the content.

I watched the speech and was very surprised at it's content. He spoke very much along religeous themes and mentioned Jesus many times.

Yeah we should go one further and have Tony Blair give a Christmas speach, I mean a War Criminal is a step up from Terrorist right?

I think they should have had George W giving the Christmas Day Address - it would have satisfied all sides .... terrorist, presidential, criminal .... but mainly just very, very funny! An opportunity missed if you ask me.

Reading the speech just then, I thought it was rather good. I applaud Channel 4 and their alternative message. I don't always like the person they chose, but I think it's important to have a slightly different message to the standard fare.

I find it pretty difficult to reconcile these two statements, which appear to contradict each other.

My point is, I'm against banning any kind of political opinion, but if we ARE discussing banning them, let's at least focus on openly agressive/racist ones.

I still think it was a consession for the release of the captured navy crew last year.
