Matt Smith now favourite

After weeks of Paterson being a dead cert on Betfair (other online bookmakers are available) Matt Smith has come from nowhere to be odds on favourite ahead of todays announcement.

Any ideas why??

On betfair it is a 2 horse race, but it is worth noting there is very little money betting on it.

I seen a clip of Matt Smith on BBC News this morning, never seen him in anything before but he does look a tad young.

I'm sure he's a good actor but he just looks so young. But normally in a situation like this it is the person who has an inexplicable surge in the betting who is the man isn't it?

It does seem odd that he's come from nowhere at the eleventh hour, not having been linked to the role at all in the months of speculation...

And I don't care that he's only 26. He's such an amazing actor and such a lovely guy. He'd be fantastic in the role.

I can cope with anyone as long as it isn't ed tudor pole.

I would have loved to have seen a richard o'brien rendition of the doctor at one time though.

Peter D was 29/30 when he took over the role - Matt will be 27, so he's hardly a baby

I think he'd make a good Doctor (I remember liking him in The Ruby in the Smoke and The Shadow of the North)..

...but I would have prefered to see him be the regeneration after this one. I wanted a slightly older Doctor again for contrast against Tennant (someone late 30's early/mid 40's....although I'd sooner have Matt Smith than Alan Davies or James Nesbitt). Whatever happens I hope they really shake-up the companion demographic.

I'm actually terrified now...

While Davison is one of my favourite Doctors, he only worked because he was such a contrast to what came before. If we have another young, energetic Doctor he's just going to look like a bad Tennant clone.

I'd give him a chance, but still...

Just because he's young doesn't mean he'd play the Doctor with the same manic energy as DT. Matt is more than capable of both light and dark and everything in between, and having seen him be superb as Thomas Becket in an NYT production of Murder in the Cathedral (and a school production a couple of years before that!), I can say he honestly has a gravitas well beyond his years.

Matt Smith? Striking name! Now there's a name you can't forget!

What was his name again?

Matt Smith as Doctor Who.

Hmm... sounds a bit dull, doesn't it? Still it could be worse. John Smith as Doctor Who!

26 is far too young to play the Doctor in my opinion. If the actors continue to get younger at their current rate then the 12th Doctor will be young enough to have episodes called "The Terror of Puberty" and "Daleks 90210"

His age may be a big advantage. Fresh perspective on the character, will appeal to younger viewers. Could work.

I think he was in a series called Party People - he worked for a labour minister and his brother was a lobbyist - might be the wrong tall gangly bloke though. If it is him he was great in that but is maybe a bit young.

Pity they aren't considering Matt Smith the football presenter for the role. He'd be much better.

Even better would be Jeff Stelling! But alas, Countdown have already nabbed him.

They'd be dancing in the streets of TNS if Jeff got the role

How is it a fresh perspective, when we've essentially had a youthful, energetic Doctor for the last three years?

Put it this way, Betfair are going to look very stupid if it now isn't Matt Smith.

Why would Betfair care who gets the part?

Aren't these things - especially in a small betting market like this - self perpetuating? Not everyone on Betfair can have inside knowledge...they just see someone's odds shorten quickly for whatever reason (and in that market it probably only took one sizeable bet) so they think there's something in it and place a bet which means the odds shorten so people think there's something behind it and place a bet which means the odds etc etc....creates a snowball effect out of proportion to the original bet/opinion/'knowledge'. It's not a market like a sport one where form or ability or injuries or whatever can be factored in when an individual makes a decision to back or lay (or indeed other reality markets where leaked voting figures or never being in the bottom 2 can help you)
