LOST - Episode Tournament

Hey,

I've worked on one of these before, and the place where I done it seemed to gather up a lot of interest and participation. Just want to see if anyone would be interested in taking part here on the cult forums.

Basically, every day, I will post up matches, pitting certain LOST episodes against each other, and you all just vote for the one you want to win. The episode that does win is submitted through to the next round, where it will later be pitted against another winning episode etc, etc.

This should take up most of the time of Season Five, so once we have got through every episode, we will wait until the Season Five finale has aired, then do a Season Five tournament.

If this has been propsed already, and either failed or succeeded, let me know, and I'll just let other threads push it down - but I thought this would be a good little way to create even more excitement now Season Five is (finally!) back on our screens.

Namaste!

Yeah, I've seen this being done on IMDB, and it appeared successful there, however I doubt you'll get a lot of voters on this forum. But might as well try it out

Sounds like a good idea. Might want to borrow Rita's Kabin's formula for Dr Who Survivor games - I'm sure he/she doesn't have it copyrighted!

Thank you for the replies, guys . Cheers Carefactornil, that's a great help. I'm going to put the matches together in the week, and hopefully launch this on Sunday, before Episode 3 airs.

Hope the matches are drawn at random - wouldn't want to see "The Constant" go up against "Walkabout" in the first one!

The Constant is a good call but I think I prefer the other Desmond time-jumping episode "Flashes Before Your Eyes"

Flashes Before Your Eyes was a brilliant episode, one of the best I've seen and clearly very important for the future of the show, although it was ever so slightly let down by some very unrealistic set dressing in the UK scenes.

But I prefer The Constant for lots of reasons, everything about it is pitch-perfect, the writing, the direction, the editing, and most of all the emotional intensity, all building up to the phone call at the end which always brings a tear to the eye thanks to the terrific acting and - as always - Giacchino's beautiful score.

This is a great idea! Probably my favourite episode was 'The Constant' where Desmond and Penny contact each other by phone. Having said that, the Season 3 finale with Charlie's death was a great episode and very sad.

Even so... maybe even the Pilot was the best one! This'll be hard!

One of my faves (sorry i don't know the title) is where we learned about the tail section survivors & good old Ana-Lucia shot the eternally irritating Shannon.

Round 1 - Match 1

Right, basically, there'll be several Rounds, each containing Matches until all the episodes have been included. After I pose the match up, feel free to post thoughts on any of the episodes/characters/anything you want, just as long as you post who you choose to proceed to the next Round.

I will include episode breakdowns for the people who cannot remember what happened in a particular episode, citing which character centric it is, for either flashback/flashforward, and the main points of what happens throughout that episode. I'm also going to add in my rating out of 10 for the episode, and if you want to add yours in the following posts, feel free...

Every episode from Seasons 1 to 4 are included, but I have intentionally left Season 5 out; this tournament shoukld play out over the remainder of Season 5 and beyond - we will have a long break to fill up after May, so we will do an individual for Season 5 then.

If you change your mind, and edit your post, if you cna PM just to let me know you've edited your choice, so i can calculate the scores accurately. For the first few matches, I am going to post 1 match up at a time, until we have a solid routine going - then I will consider doing 2 matches a day, maybe more if people would like that.

One request: if anyone knows how to get photos onto posts, could they let me know please? (I'm useless with technology - much like my namesake ). I've posted a link to a YouTube clip of a scene from the episode. Also, would like to add, all the matches were drawn at random.

Thank you for the interest, and I hope you enjoy... Let the games commence!

ROUND 1

Match 1

Lockdown Season 2, Episode 17

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICsGudYWNhQ

Episode Type: Flashback
Character Centric: John Locke

Flashbacks...
. We witness the breakdown of John and Helen's relationship, when John is forced to choose between his father or her

On the Island...
. There is a lockdown in the Hatch, and Locke is forced to put his trust in Henry Gale, after his legs are trapped under the blast doors.
. As the timer sounds, Henry crawls through a vent, in order to get to the computer and input the numbers - around the same time, a map is projected onto the blast door.
. Jack and Sawyer go head-to-head in a game of Texas Hold 'em, with Jack winning. Kate joins Jack on his trip back to the Hatch, where they find a Dharma Initiative food drop.
. Sayid reveals to Henry that they found his hot air balloon, and his wife's grave - and after digging his wife's grave up, found a man inside... a man named Henry Gale.

9/10

Vs.

Dave Season 2, Episode 18

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1OVl8aAmA8

Episode Type: Flashback
Character Centric: Hugo "Hurley" Reyes

Flashbacks...
. We see Hurley in a Mental Institution, with his friend Dave - who later turns out to be imaginary. Hurley eventually stands up to Dave, and locks him out of the institution.

On the Island...
. Libby attempts to help Hurley overcome his issue with food, but this is intecepted when the Dharma Initiative food drop is announced.
. Hurley keeps seeing Dave on the Island, but is convinced he isn't real; however, after a conversation with him, soon thinks that the Island and everything on it is not real, but in Hurley's mind.
. 'Henry' is locked up, and refers to the leader of The Others as 'him', right before Sayid shoots at him; Ana-Lucia causes the bullet to miss him.
. Libby attempts to calm Hurley down, still convinced the Island is in his mind. She tells him of her feelings for him, and kisses him. The final moments of the episode show a flashback of a scene we saw earlier in the episode, with Hurley in the Mental Institute - however, this time around, we see Libby sitting nearby, a patient in the same institution.

8/10

My vote is for Dave, purely because of that final scene - (could be partly due to my desperation for more Libby.)

Lockdown was a brilliant, mythology-dense episode with one of the best scenes ever (the blastdoor) and one of the best endings ever: "so I dug up that grave, and found there was not a woman inside but a man -- a man named henry gale". Sliding horn and CLOINK! to the LOST logo. Brilliant stuff.

Dave was a mediocre-to-decent character-piece with a "twist" that may never be revisited. Not in the same class.

My vote is for Lockdown. Great acting (as ever) from Michael Emerson, you never knew whether he was going to help Locke and push the button or do a runner. Also it had an awesome ending... 'There was not a woman in the grave, but a man....A man named Henry Gale!'. You just thought 'Hahaha, busted! So who the hell is this guy???'

Dave was good, especially the Hurley/Libby stuff on top of the cliff. Good ending in the hospital and I really wanna know why Libby was there, but something tells me they're not gonna tell us

You should have used SurveyMonkey.com and just listed every episode (you then rank each episode 1-10) and it gives you a full breakdown of results.

Lockdown for me. Wonderful scenes between Ben and Locke, and of course that blast door.
