Aasmah Mir - Radio 5 Live (+ Victoria Derbyshire)
Has Aasmah Mir taken over from the awful Stephen Nolan on the weekend spot on 5 Live?
I certainly hope so. I was disappointed that she lost the lunchtime slot after the demotion of Victoria Derbyshire. The 5 Live management seem to have lost their nerve when it comes to dealing with Victoria Derbyshire. She has been demoted and embarrassed as they went back to using the capable Nicky Campbell for the high profile morning phone-in. It is well known that many listeners thought Victoria Derbyshire was a joke and had no empathy with callers. Rather than restrict Derbyshire to 10 - 12 and keep Aasmah Mir the weak management of the BBC decided to keep Derbyshire under contract for 3 hours per day. Even when they know that there are many listeners who think she is incompetent. She often asks people to start their story just before the news then cuts them off so we don't hear their full story. Alternatively, she cuts people off a long time before the news cut-off meaning that listeners are often left to hear meaningless lead in music for up to 30 seconds. This never happened when Nicky Campbell of Fi Glover ran the mid-morning show. My solution is simple. When Victoria Derbyshire's contract expires let her seek employment elsewhere (I don't think she'll be in demand) and give the contract to Aasmah Mir. |

I've just gone to the 5Live Website as I was going to congratulate Aasmah Mir for taking over the show and the website is dedicated to Stephen Nolan.
I'm so disappointed. |

I've listened to the vacuous, grinning Ms Mir for a few years and have always thought she was some 'Faking It' contestant who would one day be outed.
No discernable talent,no charisma,no personality and if you'd heard her pathetic attempts to conduct the discussion involving Bob Stewart last night you will realise that she is totally out of her depth. |

She may not be the best at what she does, but she is better than Nolan. His rude, arrogant, and generally incompetent presenting is the only thing that makes me listen to LBC rather than Five Live.

TBH the night time line up on 5live is a sh*tfest and has been for too long. Every presenter that's been on in the last ten years has had faults. I can only take Aasmah for about 30 minutes and then I need a break from it.

Interesting, though, that Five Live have just scored their highest share in about 4 and a half years... and with only a couple of exceptions, the highest in the past *10 years*.
Which rather suggests that the endless "station's gone downhill since Julian Worricker's day" moans in here are wide of the mark. Of course, that may be your opinion as an individual.. but it's not necessarily agreed with by a majority of Five Live fans who seem to be getting more loyal. |

Stephen Nolan aside, I think it's a good station. A little too much sport for my taste perhaps, but I would say that 90% of my time that I spend listening to the radio (mainly when getting ready in the morning and driving to & from work) is to Five Live.
I wish they'd use the team of Phil Williams & Rachel Burden a little more. I think they go well together. |

I don't think it's 'well-known' as you claim. In fact, I think your personal opinion perhaps colours your judgement and that those in the profession hold a different view. As for issues relating to chopping off callers or breaking conversation to go elsewhere, maybe you could consider that is a decision made by her producer. Don't forget that anyone who feels the line-up is poor can always offer their CV and demo to the boss of Five Live.

Can't stand Nolan - he's got no broadcasting talent at all. Matthew Bannister's only ability was in putting me to sleep. |

I think Aasmah is very good. The lunchtime news bit was always silly because they repeat the news all day long on that station.
There should be more Aasmah. Less Dotun Adebayo (did you hear him "rapping" last week?) and less Stephen Nolan. |

The only way to have less of Nolan and Dotun around is to put them on a crash diet. I'm surprised the chairs don't get broken.

I normally avoid U.A.N. when Dotun is presenting (he's not even good enough to be Rhod Sharp's tea boy) but I caught a bizarre section last night where he he vanished for 10 minutes and left the two American contributors telling jokes to each other while they wondered if they were still on-air.

I don't get to hear Fi now as I'm not a big R4 listener so rarely tune in. I'm glad David Croft has progressed well. It's better going round the world with F1 than doing the darts commentary IMO. |

I don't find Aasmah terribly annoying, but she does smack of 'lightweight.' Victoria Derbyshire I've always really liked and find her way more listenable than Nicky Campbell, from whom I always get the feeling that whatever he's presenting is more about him than anything else.
I'd love to hear more of Dotun Adebayo. His weekend slot with the two guys form New York (the Gabby Cabby and the other one) is always excellent. Steven Nolan is one of the worst presenters I've ever heard. His incessant 'Devil's advocate' stance is so exhausting. |

VD hasn't been demoted. She's merely been shifted forward by 1 hour, still peak time listening. If you know about her background, you'll know why the management will not get rid of her. I agree that she's a vacuous, annoying presenter. Aasmah Mir may be very attractive looking and loves football, but I suspect those are the the 2 main reasons she's been hired on 5 Live. She's another female presenter heavily into celebrity and football culture, and as a phone-in host is every bit as as vacuous as Ms VD. |

I don't like him because, as I mentioned earlier, he's rude, arrogant, and generally incompetent. He would still be all of those even if he spoke like Brian Sewell. It's nothing to do with his accent.
