Aircraft carrier Ark Royal 'up for auction'

By
The aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal has been listed for auction by the British Ministry of Defence.

The 210-metre-long vessel, which was officially decommissioned on March 1 after 25 years of service, is available for purchase on the government's eBay-style auction website Edisposals.

Prospective bidders must be able to attend one of two viewings on May 3 or May 4 in Portsmouth. They must also be willing to disclose what they intend to do with the ship if they win it in order to pre-qualify for the bidding process.

According to The Independent, three destroyers - HMS Exeter, HMS Southampton and HMS Nottingham - are also available to buy on the website.

HMS Ark Royal, which can reach speeds of up to 30 knots, saw active service in Bosnia and Iraq. Tenders for the ship will be accepted until 10am on Monday, June 13.

It was revealed earlier this week that approximately £700,000 worth of goods including a clarinet, ceremonial swords and night-vision goggles had been stolen from the MoD in the past ten months.
