A 3D Chinese porn film has broken the Hong Kong box office record for making the most money on its opening day.

According to The Sun, 3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy, made for less than £2 million ($3.3m), took £219,852 ($364,385). The previous record was held by James Cameron's Avatar.

By contrast, the sci-fi blockbuster made £207,638 ($344,112) on day one with a budget of $237m (£143m).

Sex and Zen focuses on a sexually frustrated scholar who still has feelings for his ex-wife. Love scenes reportedly fill 25% of the movie, which can be enjoyed in 3D by wearing special glasses.

"We met people's expectations," said producer Stephen Shiu. "People have always thought that you need 3D technology for this kind of content, so people were very curious."

Shiu had previously claimed that the film would "leave audiences feeling like they are sitting right there at the edge of the bed".

Sex and Zen is a remake of the 1991 film of the same name, which is still the highest-grossing adult cinema release in Hong Kong.
