An overcrowded prison in Brazil has hired two geese to help combat escape attempts.

Wellington Picanco, a warden at the Sobral prison in São Paulo, claimed that the birds make ideal security personnel due to their ability to sense "strange movements".

He also told G1 News of his hope that the geese will alert officials to any gang violence they come across during their travels around the grounds.

Sobral prison was built to house 153 inmates, yet currently has 255 convicted criminals inside.

The prison is yet to reveal whether the goose patrol will be implemented on a permanent basis, having rejected reporters' requests for more information.

In May 2010, a rogue Canada goose threw a £100m development project in Birmingham into jeopardy by laying eggs on the building site.
