Sperm bank turns down red-headed donors due to 'low demand'

A Danish sperm bank has started turning down red-headed donors as there is "little demand" for the red-head gene.

Cryos have reported a huge increase in donors, but have put a stop to the amount of ginger haired men as people do not "choose" red heads, according to the company's director.

Ole Schou told Danish newspaper Ekstrabladet that aside from Ireland, where the red-head gene is "selling like hotcakes", demand elsewhere is "low".

"I do not think you choose a redhead, unless the partner - for example, the sterile male - has red hair, or because the lone woman has a preference for redheads," he said. "And that's perhaps not so many, especially in the latter case."

Schou added that the most popular genes requested are those that provide a child with brown hair or brown eyes.

Cryos currently have a list of around 600 men who wish to become donors. They currently deliver semen to more than 65 countries.
