A man won a squid-catching competition with a 1cm squid because the rules didn't specify a size.

Davide Thambithurai, an aquatic ecologist, was competing with 73 other fishermen trying to capture squid.

"We didn't specify a minimum size limit, it was a squid and it was caught, so we couldn't argue with it and it won," sponsor George Cunningham told Metro.

No other anglers in the England Squid Championship had any luck finding any cuttlefish this year.

Cuttingham continued, stating: "The weather conditions were just awful for squid fishing. Squid are sight predators but they weren't able to see the fishermen's bait because of the muddy waters."

Thambithrai won last year's event with a 61cm squid.

His competitors have named the squid 'The Kraken'.
