Bionic eyes are now being designed to help restore people's vision.

Loss of sight can be caused by the death of cells in the eye that detect light, but scientists at Stanford University are working on technology to restore the ability to see.

According to BBC News, early trials of the bionic eyes - known as retinal implants - have helped some go from complete blindness to being able to see light and shapes.

The device uses a special pair of glasses that takes the light information and feeds it into the back of the eye.

The implanted eye then takes that information and shoots it to the nerves.

Researchers said: "Such a fully integrated wireless implant promises the restoration of useful vision to patients blinded by degenerative retinal diseases."
