One in three young adults unaware that eggs come from chickens

One third of young adults do not know that eggs come from chickens, according to a survey.

The poll of 2,000 people conducted by charity LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) found that 33% of young adults aged between 16 and 23 were unaware of where eggs come from. 11% answered that eggs are produced from wheat or maize.

Elsewhere, 36% of the same age group failed to answer that bacon comes from pigs, while 40% did not know that cows produce milk.

Participants in the poll were asked to match images of foods with the animal or crop they came from.

This led to only 41% of young adults correctly linking butter with cows.

LEAF chief executive Caroline Drummond stated: "We often hear reports that our food knowledge may be declining but this new research shows how bad the situation is becoming.

"Despite what they think, young adults are clearly becoming removed from where their food comes from."
