A reportedly drunk lecturer forced students to sit a 23-hour-long exam in Central Russia.

The teacher did not even allow students to leave to go to the toilet during the oral exam.

One student told the Russian newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets: "Towards the end, everyone was just sitting there, totally exhausted. The lecturer would go into another room, drink, come back and start telling us about her business."

The incident took place at Kazan University with the exam starting at 10am and not finishing until 9am the next morning.

Other students commented that Physics lecturer Landysh Zaripova "stank of alcohol".

The head of the University's Physics Department, Albert Aganov, denied that the lecturer was under the influence of alcohol. He said: "I would have fired her immediately, if I had seen her drunk."

Head of Physics Aganov said that long exams were "not unusual".

Russian exams are oral and not written. The students answer questions and if the lecturer is satisfied they pass.
