Ahead of National Kissing Day on July 6, mobile operator Three has researched British textual kissing trends.

Their survey found that 18-24-year-olds were the most frequent virtual kissers.

They averaged four e-kisses being sent per day - twice the national average - earning them the nickname Generation xxxx.

25% of this age group admit to sleeping with their phone under their pillow or in their bed, and 40% also claimed a real-life success rate from virtual kisses.

Sylvia Chind, head of devices, at Three said: "Having a smartphone means we can be constantly connected to the people we care about through texting, emails and social media.

"This opens up great possibilities to add emoticons and create digital chemistry that can lead on to much more."

In fact, the survey showed that 20% of Britons who wrote e-kisses led them onto kissing the person in real life.

Three's research also found that a quarter of those polled have reciprocated textual kisses to work colleagues, but felt uncomfortable about it.

William Hanson, an etiquette expert, warned: "You should only put a kiss or hug on the end of a text, email or Facebook post if you would actually kiss them in real life."
