Research has shown that men lie more than women.

On average, men lie three times per day totalling 1,092 lies over a year as opposed to two lies per day and 728 lies over a year for women, according to the survey carried out by BMW Financial Services.

However, women were found to lie more than men in certain circumstances including when discussing shopping.

The top lie told by women is telling somebody that they are okay when they aren't. The top five was completed by saying they don't know where something is, lying about spending money, saying they haven't had that much to drink and claiming they have a headache.

Top lies told by men include claiming they had no phone signal, saying "I'm on my way" as well as saying they are okay, lying about alcohol and about spending money.

39% of women feel the need to lie about spending money as opposed to 26% of men.

In general, most people believe that lying can make life easier and Karen Pine, professor of developmental psychology at the University of Hertfordshire, agrees.

"We think lying is bad, but actually the ability to deceive others has helped humans survive as a species," she told the Daily Mail.
