Almost 1,000 civil servants in Taiwan are being made to take an internet security course after failing a secret test set by their employer.

The government of New Taipei City, near capital Taipei, sent an email claiming to contain a sex video to their 6,000 workers.

An official said that the email was sent in a bid to check how carefully the staff were following the rules in protecting their computers from hackers and viruses.

Yahoo reports that despite having a strict ban on non-work related emails, nearly 1,000 members of staff opened the fake email, which claimed to be about an ongoing Taiwan celebrity sex scandal.

Those who opened the email will have to attend a mandatory two-hour internet security course.

Taiwanese prosecutors are currently investigating the celebrity sex case, involving a Taipei socialite.
