A sushi restaurant in Vienna has installed a "spy window" that allows people in the men's toilets to look into the ladies'.

The "art installation" at One Dots Experimental Sushi consists of a one-way mirror that separates the two restrooms, and was conceived by artist Alexander Riegler.

Riegler told the daily Heute newspaper that the project is intended to "stir people into a discussion of voyeurism and surveillance".

An employee at the restaurant said that the "young and cosmopolitan" clientele "doesn't mind" the glass, but made the comment before the local paper ran a piece on the project, according to Gawker.

Several female customers subsequently complained, and the bar was forced to add a notice warning women that they could be seen.

Women at the restaurant will be able to spy on the men's bathroom in January, when Riegler plans to reverse the mirror.
