A New Mexico gun shop employee accidentally shot a customer on Tuesday (November 20).

The employee was unloading a handgun when the accident occurred, authorities have stated.

The 65-year-old unidentified customer was wounded in the back, and was airlifted from Silver City to an El Paso hospital in Texas.

He has since been said to be in good condition, according to police Captain Steve Reese.

The incident occurred at the Copper Country Sporting Arms store, with the weapon in question being a .45 caliber handgun.

"It was pretty unusual," Reese said. "We hadn't seen any signs of foul play or anything like that."

The case has now been handed over to prosecutors to decide whether any charges will be brought against the employee, who has also not been identified.

The store sells guns, ammunition, bows, archery equipment and other related sporting products.
