A man in Austria has driven 40 miles the wrong way on a motorway after getting a toothache.

While the 36-year-old was driving headlong into traffic, local radio stations pleaded with motorists to pull aside for their safety.

The incident, on the A2 Süd Autobahn motorway, happened when the driver was desperate to reach a dentist, according to the Austrian Independent.

The man - on medication and alcohol - was eventually stopped and arrested by police before being taken to a hospital. He said he did not remember anything.

The driver is said to have caused at least one accident, though no-one is reported to have been badly hurt.

A police spokesman stated afterwards: "We had put a block on the motorway to warn other drivers, but he ignored blue lights and sirens.

"He just didn't seem to notice anything."
