A Chinese man is in the process of building an ark to escape the Mayan apocalypse he believes is coming.

Lu Zhenghai, from northwest China, has already spent $160,000 (£100,000) on the Noah-like ark.

Lu began building the 65 foot vessel in 2010 when he started to fear that the so-called doomsday flood would threaten the survival of his family.

The Huffington Post translated Lu's comments to the China News Service: "I took all my savings and invested in the construction of this boat. When the time comes, everyone can take refuge in it."

Despite using his life savings to make the boat, it remains unfinished due to a lack of funds.

There are many who believe, like Lu, that the end of the world is to come on December 21, the day the Mayan calendar runs out. Subsequent reports have been published attempting to convince people the apocalypse will not occur.

If the apocalypse fails to take place then Lu has thought about what he will do with his boat. Lu said that he hopes the vessel will attract tourists wanting to take sightseeing tours. He also said that the boat could be used as a ferry.
