Holiday workers became saviours as they rescued a sea-going deer.

Workers at a holiday resort in Hawaii took to the water when they saw the animal struggling, 200 metres out at sea.

The axis deer was spotted struggling off of Wailea Beach on Maui Island and it could barely keep its head above the water.

The workers from the Four Seasons Resort rushed to the animal's aid and tried to get it to shore.

Michael Boyer, spokesperson for the resort, said: "The deer came sprinting down he path leading to the ocean and actually ran directly into the ocean."

A beach lifeguard swam out and tried to put a rescue tube under the deer, which proved to be extremely difficult.

Eventually, she succeeded and rescuers then hauled the deer to shore where it was put in the back of a beach buggy and taken to nearby woods to be released.
