Dwight Yorke has said that he slept with a football in his bed until he was 25 years old.

The former Aston Villa and Manchester United striker made the revelation during an appearance at a school in London, The Mirror reports.

Yorke explained that football was a "way out" of his overcrowded home in the Caribbean island of Tobago.

The 41-year-old told students at The Urswick School, in Hackney, north-east London: "I slept with a ball in my bed until I was 25 years of age, every night."

That means the Trinidad and Tobago star took a football to bed with him until 1996, seven years after first turning professional with Aston Villa.

Yorke scored 147 goals in 479 appearances during his professional league career in England and Australia, and netted 19 goals in 74 games for his national team.
