Woman makes artwork from chewing gum

By
A Ukrainian artist has made a name for herself by making portraits out of chewing gum.

Anna Sofia Matveyeva chews the gum before sorting it into colours then warms it in the microwave.

So far her portraits have included Apple co-founder Steve Jobs which took 1,000 pieces of gum, and Elton John which took 250 pieces.

She is currently working on one of Mircea Lucescu, the manager of local football team FC Shakhtar, which will also require about 250 pieces.

The unusual portraits take a week and a half, with three weeks dedicated to Steve Jobs.

Matveyeva said of her artwork: "Chewing gum is not simply a material I use in my work, chewing gum is a symbol. Why chewing gum and why those people?

"Those people are famous in their profession, the people who have been influenced by many other people in their development, and also the people who themselves greatly influenced other people. One chewing gum is one person. Roughly speaking it's a symbol."

Each portrait weighs about five kilos and Matveyeva hopes to open an exhibition of her work.
