The woman was in the garden of her home in Sorgues, south-eastern France, when the dog knocked the gun she was holding to one side.

"At the moment she pulled the trigger, her dog jumped on her and diverted the shot," a local police officer told Le Figaro (via The Daily Telegraph).

The officer, who said that police believed the dog "probably sensed things and knocked into her to save her", added that the loyal pet appears to have been "very affected" by his owner's actions.

The woman was found by her husband and taken to hospital, where she is being treated for an injury to her chest. Her condition is not thought to be life-threatening.
