'Wii Music' fails to make US top ten

Nintendo's Wii Music has failed to make the US top ten after selling under 81,000 units in its first 11 days of release, according to figures from NPD Group.

The much-hyped title sold a fraction of its nontraditional predecessor Wii Fit, which racked up sales of 687,700 units over a similar time period in April.

The saturation of the rhythm genre with titles like Guitar Hero and Rock Band, coupled with the fact that Wii Music did not come bundled with hardware, have been cited as reasons for the game's modest sales.

However, Nintendo remained upbeat, with executive VP of sales and marketing Cammie Dunaway telling MTV: "We're predicting that it’s going to be an evergreen title.

"And if you look at titles like Brain Age, it's about the same as what Brain Age did during it’s first few weeks and went on to sell 2.5 million copies.

"Wii Fit certainly had a larger launch than that. But I think that people are starting to understand Wii Music."
