Xbox 360 and PS3 sales 'neck and neck'

Latest Chart Track data has revealed Sony's PS3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360 "were pretty much neck and neck" following a hardware sales surge during the Easter break.

Microsoft's next-gen console enjoyed a 78% increase, with Sony's PlayStation 3 not far behind after it saw its sales leap by 73%. However, in terms of week-on-week sales this year, the PS3 is ahead of Microsoft's console.

Games sales also enjoyed a 'significant' leap as parents and school children spent the Easter break buying the latest releases.

“Week 12 fell during Easter so we saw software and hardware up across the board,” Chart Track director Dorian Bloch told MCV.

“PS3 and Xbox 360 are pretty much neck and neck at the moment, with PS3 slightly ahead. Software was up, and the formats that Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 appeared on did especially well.”

Speaking of the launch of Sony's Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, Bloch added: "The release of GT5 Prologue and its bundle will see a further rise on PS3 after its release. PS3 has been outselling Xbox 360 for some time, but last week they were pretty close. In terms of sales so far this year, PS3 is ahead.”

Easter Sales Surge:

360 - Up 78%
PS3 - Up 73%
Wii - Up 37%
DS - Up 32%
