A new Portable PlayStation golf sim is aiming to take handheld gaming to a whole new level by offering 16-player online global tournaments, Sony has announced.

Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee 2, which will allow players to challenge other gamers around the world, is seen as an attempt to bring mass market global online play to the portable device.

A total of 12 courses in places such as snow-capped mountains and tropical islands will be on offer, as well as allowing up to eight local players to compete via March Play or go head-to-head in Ad Hoc mode.

“The Hot Shots Golf franchise has been a perennial winner over the years for PlayStation, and we are very excited to bring the game’s quirky golf experience back to PSP,” said Jeff Reese, director of software marketing at Sony. “With greater online capabilities, challenging new courses, and a variety of gameplay modes, Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee 2 is a stimulating portable experience that delivers all the charm and fun the Hot Shots Golf series has to offer.”

Hot Shots Golf: Tee 2 will be released on PSP in June.
