This week on PSN… Crystal Defenders!

Published Friday, Jul 24 2009, 13:38 BST | By Matthew Reynolds | Add comment
After last week’s barren update of one demo (although it was for the rather excellent Trash Panic) and a few videos, Sony has decided to give us a double dose of content, with two excellent PSN titles and a horde of sizable DLC updates, including a massive update to Wipeout HD and a Rock Band debut for Kings of Leon. Delicious.

Games

Crystal Defenders: After invading practically every downloadable service under the sun, Crystal Defenders positions itself on the PSN store. Set in the same world as Final Fantasy Tactics, this tower-defence game uses units, spells and monsters from the iconic series.

It's the same as the Xbox Live version (which in turn was based on the iPhone version) and contains all three chapter packs at 100 missions each, and has online leaderboards to boot. It’s a hefty package for £9.99, and since it launches with a free demo, it’s at least worth checking out for anyone that enjoyed PSN fan-favourite PixelJunk Monsters.

Shatter: Offering a novel twist on brick-breaking games such as Arkanoid, you can use powerful physics to, ahem, 'suck' and 'blow' the ball and surrounding objects. Although it’s single-player only, it mixes up proceedings by throwing in shooting mechanics and imposing boss battles. It won several innovation awards at this year’s E3, and for for £4.79, it's certainly worth checking out.

Downloadable Content

Wipeout HD: Fury Expansion Pack: The PlayStation classic rides on with a hefty update for £7.99. Fury adds 12 new tracks (including a few old favourites from Pulse and Pure), 13 new ships, and three modes - Eliminator, Zone Battle and Detonator. It also includes 12 bronze Trophies for those who want to do barrel rolls and attempt to see every stat in the game.

Killzone 2: Napalm & Cordite Map Pack: Two new maps, two new weapons. Suljeva Cliffside hands you a flamethrower, while Arctower Landing chucks you a Boltgun and sends you packing. You can grab them both for £4.79, or better yet, you can grab this and all previous map packs together for £9.99.

Elsewhere, Overlord II offers the Battle Rock Nemesis for the Coliseum at £3.19, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 adds the 'world famous' Canadian course Banff Springs for £4.79, and Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires adds some more music to play from the menu BGM selection. It’s free, so you can’t really complain.

Track Packs

Rock Band: Three track packs, three debuts, including the mighty Kings of Leon. As usual, they’re £2.49 for a set, or 99p each.

Kings of Leon Pack 1: 'Crawl', 'Molly's Chambers', 'Sex on Fire'
Rancid Pack 1: 'Last One to Die', 'Ruby Soho', 'Time Bomb'
Rise Against Pack 1: 'Prayer of the Refugee', 'Re-Education', 'Saviour'

Guitar Hero: World Tour: One pack from the Vagrant Records label. £1.59 per track, or £4.39 for the lot.

Vagrant Track Pack: 'All The World is Mad' by Thrice, 'The Martyr' by Sense Fail, 'Young Cardinals' by Alexisonfire

PSP / PSone Downloads

Nothing for the PSone store this week but for PSP, Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce provides its third free download pack, adding three new missions, and Rock Band Unplugged has two tracks - 'Casey Jones' by Grateful Dead, and 'The Boys Are Back In Town' by Thin Lizzie - at 99p a pop.

Phew, that’s about it! What did you pick up this week?
