A closer look at 'Retro/Grade'

Last week indie developer 24 Carat Games confirmed that its innovative shooter Retro/Grade - nominated in two categories at this year’s Independent Games Festival - will be coming to the PlayStation 3 via the PlayStation Network, merging several tried and tested game mechanics with a time-travelling twist.
Although it looks like a traditional horizontal shoot-em-up, it’s actually a cross between a puzzle game and Guitar Hero. Running in reverse, players must recapture bullets by moving up and down the screen, all while avoiding enemy fire.
The crux is that you don’t actually shoot anything, instead concentrating on hitting the white bullets that stream across the screen, much like hitting notes in a rhythm game. Not only does it play along with the delightful retro-themed music, but it also gives you the option to play along with a guitar peripheral.
Of course, it throws in some shooter elements to keep you on your toes. You'll have to navigate screens packed with unfriendly fire and take on boss battles in reverse. And for those that tend to miss a note, you can forward time and have a second go at trying to reach the end. Or rather, the start. Take that, Metallica.
If you can’t wait until it arrives next year, or want to do the time-warp again, then you can play the two stage IGF-submitted demo via Steam or check out the trailer below.
