This week the Summer of Arcade opens fan-favourite Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 up for business. Gears Of War 2 takes on Solid Snake in this stealthy Dark Corners expansion, and you can try out a spot of dogfighting. For free. And no, it's not the illegal betting kind.

Games

Marvel Vs. Capcom 2: One of the most celebrated fighting games of all time sees some of the biggest names in comics and video game have a good old fashioned scrap. Always wanted to know who would win between Ryu and Wolverine? What about Chun-Li versus Jill Valentine? And Iron Man versus Mega Man? Find out for 1200 Microsoft Points (£10.20).

It’s horribly unbalanced as fighters go, but doesn’t make the insane three-team matchups any less fun to play. The team shares a single 'super meter' between them, meaning that deploying fighters at the right time is crucial to success. And as you can guess, it's not just punches and kicks; expect fireballs, zombies, and supernova sprites that take up the entire screen.

Based on the Dreamcast version (leaving the 'interesting' PS2 and Xbox versions well alone) it provides access to all 56 fighters from the off, and uses the same excellent netplay as Super Street Fighter II HD Remix. A variety of HD smoothing options and widescreen displays make this the best version of a mapcap classic.

Downloadable Content

Gears Of War 2: Dark Corners: The fourth map pack for the cover-heavy shooter has a staggering seven maps and a single-player campaign mission to chew on. Removed from the final game, the stealth segment (introduced by lead designer Cliff Bleszinski) is interesting but far too short and lacking in ideas. The maps are pretty decent, including an impressive petrol station set in the middle of a sandstorm. Read what we thought of it here before shelling out 1200 (£10.20) Microsoft Points.

If you haven’t got any Gears Of War 2 downloadable content, then get be sure to pick up the All Fronts Collection, which features the above and every piece of DLC for just 1600 (£13.60) Microsoft Points.

Demos

IL2 Sturmovik - Birds of Prey: This is a mission-long demo of the aerial-combat simulator out in September. The full version features battles over famous WWII events, including The Battle of Britain, Stalingrad, Berlin, Sicily, the Battle of the Bulge and Korsun. Sound interesting? Then download the free demo.

Track Packs

Rock Band: Three rocking packs this week, for 440 points (£3.75) or 160 points (£1.35) each.

Blink 182 Pack 1: 'Down', 'Feeling This', 'The Rock Show'
Weezer Pack 2: 'My Name Is Jonas', 'Pork And Beans', 'Undone (The Sweater Song)'
KISS Pack 1: '100,000 Years (Live)', 'Deuce (Live)', 'Parasite (Live)'

Deal of the Week

Far Cry 2 Fortunes Pack: A cheap add-on gets a discount: three new weapons, two vehicles and four multiplayer maps to use them in for 240 points. But only until Monday.

Next Week…

The Summer of Arcade keeps on giving with TMNT: Turtles In Time Re-Shelled, a 3D remake of a classic brawler.
