This week on Virtual Console… Pilotwings!

After a number of pretty average weeks across all platforms, Nintendo gives us a hell of an offering with Pilotwings, Mario Vs. Donkey Kong and Bit.Trip Core all on the same day. Hope you've saved your Nintendo Points!
Virtual Console
Pilotwings: The classic SNES flight simulator comes to Virtual Console. A launch title for the console in Japan back in 1990, you can take a spin at flying light planes, hang gliders and perform skydiving through the technical wizardry of extensive Mode 7 visuals.
Its dizzying use of sprite rotation and scaling still looks great today, and the gameplay is simple yet quite involving when it comes to landing the plane and going through floating rings. It gets very hard in later stages, and features lots of little secrets and cameos from other Nintendo franchises to find. Download it for 800 Nintendo Points (£5.60).
DSiWare
Donkey Kong: Minis March Again: After being released in the US days after its E3 announcement earlier in the year, the third instalment in puzzle-platformer series finally makes its way to Europe. It's a little like Lemmings, where you have to guide Mini Marios to safety, and comes with a feature-rich level editor which can share stages with others online. It's effectively a full DS product in downloadable form, so it comes at great value for 800 Nintendo Points (£5.60).
Pop Plus: Solo: The simple ideas are often the best, and Pop is no exception. A mobile version of the WiiWare launch title, you tap bubbles as fast as possible to get a high score. Chaining bubbles of the same colour gets you score multipliers, and this DSi version comes with some all-new modes for 600 Nintendo Points (£4.20).
WiiWare
Bit.Trip Core: The second release in the Bit.Trip series offers more rock-hard retro action. Lines travel from all four sides of the screen, which must be deflected in time to create music, with the visuals evolving based on your performance. It becomes very difficult very quickly, but it's all rather hypnotic to observe. 600 Nintendo Points (£4.20) gets one of the more unique games on the service.
Arkanoid Plus!: After releasing the block-breaking arcade title on DS, you can now use the Wii Remote to move the paddle across hundreds of stages and various new modes. It's very similar to the Xbox Live re-release, featuring crisp 2D visuals and succulent nods to other Taito franchises. It's now available for 800 Nintendo Points (£5.60).
