Live Blog: gamescom 2010 'SF X Tekken' event

By
Street Fighter X Tekken
13:00: Hello and welcome to our live coverage of Street Fighter X Tekken's European premier. As little is known of the crossover project, much speculation surrounds today's event. The venue is split down the middle with Street Fighter fans garbed in blue on the left, and the Tekken faithful dressed in red to the right. The atmosphere is charged with anticipation.

13:03: And we're off. The hostess encourages the two sets of fans to jeer each other right away, all in good fun of course.

13:05: The lights go down and we are shown an artist-looking intro sequence featuring Ryu from Street Fighter and Kazuya from Tekken. It has been rendered in the same style as SFIV's intro.

13:07: Actors portraying the fighters step onto the stage. Ryu enters to the Street Fighter theme, shrouded in smoke. Kazuya from the Tekken series follows and performs a series of kicks and punches. The crowd goes wild.

13:09: The pair engage in battle, performing choreographed moves from their respective games. This is quite a spectacle!

13:11: Capcom's Yoshinori Ono enters the stage dressed as Chun-Li. SF fans cheer, Tekken fans engage in some mock boo. Full marks for the theatrics!

13:13: The pantomime continues. Namco's Katsuhiro Harada is shown via video link, enjoying a glass of wine with actresses dressed as Chun-Li and Nina respectively. The crowd begins to chant Harada's name and he strides onto the stage with Chun Li and Nina in tow. Presumably, all of the fighters represented will feature in the game.

13:20: Retrospective artwork of Chun-Li is shown on-screen, followed by screenshots of Nina from the Tekken series during her PSone days.

13:22: Nina performs choreographed moves much to the delight of the male sections of the audience. Chun-Li then steps up to show what she can. The crowd is equally approving.

13:27: A clear winner between the SF and Tekken perfomers cannot be decided on their repertoires alone, so a gaming contest is announced.. and the title they will be playing is Street Fighter X Tekken! Harada and Ono pick up pads and prepare to do battle.

13:28: Footage of the game appears on screen. Ryu is shown in his traditional white robes. Kazuya steps up to do battle with him. Tag mechanics similar to the Marvel vs Capcom titles will feature in the game. Nina jumps in in place of Kazuya and begins pummelling Ryu. Ryu then tags Chun-Li in a bid to turn the tables. Graphics resemble SFIV but more look vibrant and fluid. The speedometer has been cranked up and the blows exchanged are furious and palpable. The level on show resembles something from a science fiction movie. Giant robots can be seen in the background.

13:31: The words 'to be continued' flash up on screen.

13:33: Looks like a new character could be unveiled!

13:34: A picture of David Hasslehoff appears on stage to the Knight Rider theme tune. Supoposedly he's our new fighter. We've been hoaxed!

13:36: Serious business is promised, maybe we'll get to see that new fighter now?

13:37: Even better! Something of Namco Bandai's Tekken X Street Fighter is to be shown.

13:38: A comical redesign of the original Street Fighter II box art featuring Tekken characters is shown on screen as a treat for Gamecom attendees. It is greeted with laughter.

13:40: Finally, a game model of Ryu from Tekken X Street Fighter appears on screen for a microsecond. The image is rendered in the traditional Tekken 3D style but doesn't give anything of substance away.

13:42: Harada says that Namco Bandai is currently working on another project, so Tekken X Street Fighter may be sometime away, and Street Fighter X Tekken will arrive first.

13:48: Ono signs off by thanking Namco Bandai for allowing Capcom to realise this "dream match” of fighting franchises and thanking the fans.

13:49: The actors round things off with some more choreographed moves.

13:50: That's all folks!
