Games out this week: Theatrhythm Final Fantasy, Spelunky, Secret World

The month of July kicks off with a number of high-profile releases, including two unique rhythm games for Nintendo systems, a modern-day MMO and an award-winning downloadable platformer.

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy

Release date: July 6 (Europe), July 3 (North America)
Platforms: 3DS

This musical spinoff sees the soundtracks from over 13 Final Fantasy games turned into a rhythm action game. It also allows you to create your own party made of classic characters including Cloud, Squall and Tidus to earn experience and new abilities, and share randomised dungeon playlists with others over StreetPass.

Beat the Beat: Rhythm Paradise

Release date: July 6 (Europe), July 3 (North America)
Platforms: Wii

The cult Rhythm Heaven series comes to consoles. While this Wii version doesn't make use of the motion controller, instead simply relying on timed button presses, you can still expect inventive and madcap musical mini-games, as well as a new multiplayer mode so two people can play at once.

Spelunky

Release date: July 4 (worldwide)
Platforms: Xbox Live Arcade

Originally released on PC for free in 2009, players must explore a series of randomly-generated levels filled with traps and treasures. The re-release features hand-painted visuals, multiplayer with up to three others and a new soundtrack. Spelunky won the 'Excellence in Design' award in this year's Independent Games Festival.

The Secret World

Release date: July 3 (worldwide)
Platforms: PC

From the creators of Anarchy Online and Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures is a massively-multiplayer game set in the present day. Aligning with one of three secret societies, players must investigate various myths, conspiracies and horror stories in real-world locales.
