'Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn' episode three review

By
Last week's Forward Unto Dawn episode ended on something of a cliffhanger after troubled UNSC cadet Lasky passed out during a 'capture the flag' exam gone awry. A confiscated quiche, meanwhile, lit the fuse for a fight between Lasky and his arch-nemesis cadet Vickers, while love interest Chyler Silva showed off her soldiering credentials in an early morning training drill.

With the Covenant invasion looming, Master Chief floating endlessly in space and the excitement of exam results day still to come, this week promises to be the most explosive episode yet.

Episode three begins with Halo mainstay Cortana threatening to pull the plug on a comatose Master Chief, who's now been asleep on board the UNSC spaceship for well over 1,000 days. Fortunately for all, a sudden development sees Cortana snap out of her psychosis, although the need to think things through doesn't bode well for anybody.

Back at the academy, Lasky wakes up to the news that he's got a rare cryogenic sleeping drug allergy, something which might prevent him from ever holding a rifle again. On the bright side, at least he can explain the body blisters to main squeeze Silva, saving him an embarrassing trip to the STD clinic.

With the rest of the day off, Lasky sticks on another one of his family movies (yawn), which leads Silva to ask why he continues to torture himself over the past. Perhaps she should have asked why he continues to torture us with these never-ending family films.

Lasky's pining is interrupted by the other cadets, who want to show him a classified video of what appears to be Master Chief and a crew of cybernetically-enhanced soldiers. Even more interestingly, we catch a glimpse of what they're fighting, and it's not a pretty sight.

From one bombshell to another, Lasky is told that his medical condition is severe enough for him to quit the academy. Typically, Lasky sticks on another family video (of sorts), which is when we finally find out the fate of his bigger bro.

For those who enjoy a bit of romance, the next scene is the one we've all been waiting for. Lasky and Silva finally plant one on each other after an emotional heart-to-heart about his future at the academy. With all of the bad luck he's had, Lasky deserved that one. Things are most definitely looking up.

Or at least they would be for anyone other than the hapless Lasky, who's denied second base not by a slap to the face, but by the academy's emergency alarm system urging all cadets to report to the tower. This is not a drill, people!

After two and a half episodes, this is where Forward Unto Dawn finally kicks into gear. Confused and just a bit scared, the cadets have no idea what's going on, except for Lasky, who correctly identifies that the academy is under attack. It's about now that a number of enemy ships appear, in what's without doubt one of the more intense and unsettling scenes of the series so far.

In what proves to be a bigger mistake than the development of Halo Wars, the blonde cadet uses her family's clout to get a lift out of "danger" and away from the team, something which ultimately leads to her doom. The crumbling tower looks incredible, and is further proof that the Forward Unto Dawn team know how to do special effects.

The final scene is the best of the lot, as the Covenant invaders are introduced in the flesh for the very first time, energy swords and all. Lasky witnesses their destructive force and promptly gets the hell out of dodge with Silva in tow. In terms of cliffhangers, it sure beats failing an exam or a brief glimpse of a spaceship.

This week's Forward Unto Dawn really stepped it up a notch, setting the scene for what should be an action-packed and intense last couple of episodes. It's nice to see the Lasky/Silva romance develop, but even better to see the Covenant invaders smashing stuff up with those impressive energy swords. More of the same next week please.
