The firm's flagship system saw its sales more than double the 700,000 units sold in the same period last year, while software also surged ahead, with 22.8 million games sold compared to 18.1 million during the first financial quarter of 2007.
The PlayStation Portable also saw its worldwide sales rise in terms of hardware and software, with 3.72 million machines sold between April to June 2008 compared to 2.13 million during the same period last year, while game sales rose from just two million to 11.8 million.
The PlayStation 2 suffered a drop in sales of both hardware and software, however, with console sales falling from 2.66 million to 1.51 million, with same sales tumbling from 31.1 million to 19.3 million.
Sony said it expects sales of the PlayStation 3 to reach 10 million worldwide between April 2008 to April 2009, along with 15 million PlayStation Portable consoles.
