Messi, who plays for both the national squad and club side FC Barcelona, will feature on the packaging of all versions of the title in Europe, as well as on promotional materials for the game.
Commenting on the signing, Konami's Jon Murphy said: "Lionel Messi is an incredibly exciting player, and one who enjoys a worldwide reputation for skill, pace and all-round ability.
"He is the ideal player to front PES 2009, and his enthusiasm for the new game is certain to shine as we work closely together in the promotion of what will be the most advanced PES title to date.”
Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 will be released for PS3, Xbox 360, PS2, PSP, Wii, PC and mobile phone in Spring 2009.
