At the Let's Rock event in San Francisco, CEO Steve Jobs announced: "Now you can make a pretty good argument that it is the best portable device for playing games on."
He said that there are over 3,000 applications available, 600 of which are games, meaning there is "something here for everyone".
The new iPod Touch, which sports a more ergonomic look and extra features, was unveiled alongside a new Nano model and updated iTunes software.
The iPod Touch will be released next week in 8GB, 16GB and 32GB sizes, with prices starting at £169.
