The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has confirmed that Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto will receive the Champion Award at its upcoming Nite To Unite For Kids charity event.
Miyamoto first joined Nintendo as staff artist in 1977. He is the mastermind behind some of Nintendo’s most successful series, including Super Mario Bros, Donkey Kong and The Legend Of Zelda. Most recently he has been credited as the driving force behind the Nintendo Wii’s rise to prominence.
The event, which will be co-chaired by THQ president Brian Farrell, Disney Interactive Studios general manager Graham Hopper and Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello, will take place on October 22 at the Westin St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco. Proceeds will go to various children’s charities.
Previous recipients of the award include Sony’s Ken Kutaragi, George Lucas and EA’s Bing Gordon.
