In an interview with Wired.com, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales and marketing, Cammie Dunaway, said that Nintendo is working hard to increase the machine's user base, despite the emergence of the DSi.
"You've seen some of the work we've done this year with celebrities, that we're bringing a lot of new consumers in to the DS. So I think there's opportunity for both of them to coexist for some period of time," said Dunaway.
She was also keen to point out that the DSi would still be about gaming and having fun, despite the new gadgetry such as the camera: "What we like to do is make things fun, and so when you start taking pictures and superimposing people's faces onto someone else's body, and surrounding it with graffiti and sharing it with a friend, it's just fun."
Dunaway also suggested that the camera would be used as a gameplay tool and not just a multimedia add-on.
