Ubisoft outdoes Nintendo on DS

Ubisoft ended Nintendo's 196-week reign at the top of the UK DS software chart last week, becoming the first third-party publisher to do so.
The platform holder has dominated the handheld format's chart since the system was launched in March 2005, but Ubisoft's success has challenged the popular belief that the DS is inhospitable to third party developers.
Ubisoft's landmark achievement is a result of its Games For Everyone back catalogue, combined with the success of recent release Imagine: Teacher And Puzzler Collection.
"It’s a massive milestone for us and the industry - a really big deal," Ubisoft marketing director Jon Rosenblatt told MCV. “We’ve always been highly successful in pushing our back catalogue and we’re also good at pushing promotions with the right price at the right time."
GFK ChartTrack analyst Chris Poole is unsure whether a third-party developer will ever achieve this feat again. "Ubisoft won it in the budget chart. Even this week, they’ve got eight entries in the Budget Top 30 to Nintendo’s six. Their Imagine range just keeps on selling. It’s a real surprise - and I can’t predict one way or the other if anyone will ever do it again.”
