Next Xbox 'forward compatible'?

The third generation Xbox will reportedly run Xbox 360 games with higher frame rates, improved draw distances (the reduction of scenery pop-up) and support for the new controller.
Microsoft is said to be "testing the waters" before it finalises the specifications for the new console. However, it is introducing the idea to developers early so that current software will support the enhancements.
