According to data compiled by NPD Group, combined sales of the DS and the newly-released DSi exceeded 1 million units - an all-time April record for any video game platform in the territory.
Nintendo's Wii also outsold all other current-generation home consoles combined for the month, shifting 340,000 units.
"Nintendo systems and software represented 56% of the industry total shares in April, indicating continued strong consumer preference for quality and value,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales and marketing.
"Looking ahead, we are excited to introduce active-play games like Punch-Out!! and Wii Sports Resort into the market."
Punch-Out!! is released in Europe on May 22, followed by Wii Sports Resort on July 24.
