Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be the first follow-up to a 3D Mario game on the same Nintendo console.
It will feature unique takes on gravity, giant enemies and spherical, snow and ghost worlds to explore. According to the trailer, Yoshi can be used to defeat opponents and fly between planets.
Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto said that there were "tons of ideas" left over from the first title, and that "more than 90 per cent...maybe closer to 95 or 99 per cent...will be brand new," says Eurogamer.
The game is expected for release next year.
The title was unveiled at yesterday’s Nintendo conference from E3 2009.
