A programmer from the studio made the comments after complaints from gamers over frame rate problems in the Wii version of the point-and-click adventure.
"Frame rate issues will probably get sorted out eventually, but keep in mind that the Wii is just not a powerful console. An iPhone is much more powerful than a Wii, even," he wrote on a forum.
Telltale's comments stirred up controversy, but the firm stood by its statement, claiming that the Wii and DS are "extremely underpowered" in later posts.
Tales Of Monkey Island is now available for PC and Wii. It was released alongside Monkey Island: Special Edition, available for iPhone, PC and Xbox 360.
