The title was showcased at last week's GamesCom, where it was praised for its graphical improvement over the Sega Genesis original. A virtual D-pad was used to control the game in the demonstration.
An Xbox Live port of the 16-bit classic will arrive one month before the iPhone version, with a PlayStation Network release also confirmed. It appeared on Virtual Console alongside its sequel last year.
Debuting in 1994, the original game garnered a cult following, spawning a television spin-off, a line of toys and a series of comic books. Its bizarre storyline follows an ordinary earthworm who finds himself piloting a robotic suit. He is joined by a colourful cast of characters, including Psy-Crow, Bob The Killer Goldfish, and Princess What's-Her-Name.
It was previously announced that studio Interplay will be teaming up with series creator Douglas TenNapel to develop a new game in the franchise, as well as other media projects based on the character.
An official release date for Earthworm Jim on the iPhone is yet to be confirmed.
