Developed by Ukrainian studio 4A Games, the Xbox 360 and PC title is based on the bestselling Russian novel of the same name by Dmitry Glukhovsky.
The story unfurls in a shattered Metro subway station under the Russian capital in the year 2033, two decades after a devastating apocalypse has annihilated nearly all mankind and turned the world into a poisonous wasteland.
All the remaining survivors have built a life under ground due to the "mutant horrors" which await on the surface.
However, players will take on the role of Artyom, who must venture outside the Metro Station-City limits into the forbidding world above in order to save the future of mankind.
"Metro 2033 will plunge gamers into a terrifying vision of the future," said THQ vice president of global brand management Richard Williams.
"4A Games has worked closely with Dmitry Glukhovsky to deliver a unique game world, a compelling, cinematic story and an incredible, atmospheric experience to rival anything in the category."
Metro 2033 will be released at some point in 2010.
