Microsoft has played down the gaming potential of its portable media device the Zune HD.
Reports that the platform could feature gaming Apps similar to those available for the iPhone have been in circulation since a pre-launch trailer showed the device running a 3D racing game.
However, the technology firm has now dismissed rumours that it will be competing with Apple in the handheld games market. "Zune HD is a robust and full-featured media player that includes a few casual games. Zune is primarily focused on personal entertainment and is not in the business of portable gaming," a Microsoft spokesperson told DS.
It was also revealed that the racing game in question is Project Gotham Racing, which originally appeared on the Xbox in 2002.
"We'll be adding 3D games such as Project Gotham Racing in the coming months and will continue to look at offering additional applications in the future. Stay tuned," the firm added.
The Zune HD arrived in North America earlier this year. It is not expected to be released in the UK until 2010.
