The original Super Mario Kart is to be released for the Wii via its Virtual Console download service, Nintendo has announced.
Costing 800 Wii Points (£4.80), the classic racer will be available through the online storefront from next week.
Originally released for the Super Nintendo in 1993, the game sold over eight million units worldwide, making it the third-bestselling title on the system. The player takes control of one of eight classic Super Mario characters, including Mario, Bowser, Toad and Donkey Kong, and competes for racing cups over three difficulty levels.
Mario Kart has spawned seven sequels to date across multiple platforms, including two arcade outings. The game is often credited with popularising the kart-racing sub-genre.
Nintendo has also announced that SNES classic Pilotwings will also arrive on Virtual Console over the Christmas period, along with N64 favourite Super Smash Brothers. No pricing or release date has been confirmed for these titles.
